Food Security

“Food security—the ability to obtain and use sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food—is a fundamental human need. Climate change is very likely to affect global, regional, and local food security by disrupting food availability, decreasing access to food, and making food utilization more difficult.”

Due to its remoteness and dryness, the Kunene region of Namibia is particularly vulnerable to food security shocks brought about by climate, energy, trade and fertilizer disruptions.

The first goal of HIC is to develop a community garden and training center. Community leaders are eager to initiate local vegetable production as there is none currently.

PROGRESS N THE COMMUNITY GARDEN:

Cement Being delivered for the construction of the elephant proof wall

Making great progress on constructing the wall! Progress is a bit slower than expected. With lions in the area, workers are afraid of sleeping at the worksite. HIC is supplying tents to provide security. We plan to be ready to plant in the next three months. Keep checking back for progress.
